2013 Playoff Predictions

The regular season has come to a close and as the calendar turns to October it’s time to look at the playoffs. I’ll take a crack at predicting the post season with the caveat that we know that anything can happen in the post season.

NL Wildcard

CIN v. PIT
As I have mentioned previously, I don’t have a ton of faith in the Pirates. Francisco Liriano takes the mound for the Buccos against fellow Dominican Johnny Cueto. I like the Reds in this one game elimination. I think they have a stronger line up and Billy Hamilton has a flair for the dramatic. I expect him to play a role as the Reds move on to face the Cardinals.

Winner: Cincinnati Reds

AL Wildcard

TB v. CLE
The Indians finished the season by winning 10 straight games and they will host the Rays. The Tribe will send rookie Danny Salazar to the bump to face off against Alex Cobb. Not exactly a marquee pitching matchup, but both teams exemplify a team oriented approach that depends on strong contributions from all players on the roster. I like the Rays in this game. I think that Joe Maddon will pull all of the necessary strings to maximize his teams strengths. I also have a lot more confidence in the Rays pitching top to bottom. I wouldn’t be surprised if both Salazar and Cobb could come out and struggle early and get a quick hook. Justin Masterson will be available out of the pen for Cleveland which will help them, but beyond that I like the Rays pen over the Indians.

I also expect this post season to be Wil Myers coming out party. Look for Myers to play well against the Indians and continue to produce throughout the playoffs.

Winner: Tampa Bay Rays

From here on our a lot will depend on the pitching matchups so I’ll just be doing which team I think will win. I’ll do a more comprehensive preview as each series gets underway.
